By the end of the BioEYES week, 2nd grade students will have a better understanding of the following standards in alignment with the Utah Common Core:

STANDARD 1: Process, Communication and Nature of Science

Objective 1: Using the process of scientific investigation

  1. Creating a hypothesis, focusing a question.
  2. Designing investigations. How can we test that? Does my design actually test that?
  3. Conducting investigations. Actually testing that.
  4. Drawing conclusions. What did I learn from my investigation?
  • During BioEYES:
    • Students will formulate a hypothesis and make observations. For example they formulate a hypothesis for which fish are the males and which are the females. They can start to think about how to test their hypothesis.
    • Students will collect data in the form of counting embryos, charting these embryos and then tracking the transition from embryo to larva. This will allow them to conduct investigations. How long does it take for an embryo to become a larvae? They will determine this empirically for themselves.

Objective 2: Communicating science

  1. Socially interacting with peers.
  2. Sharing ideas with peers.
  3. Connecting ideas with evidence.
  4. Multiple methods of communication.
  • During BioEYES:
    • Students will work in groups of 4. They will communicate their observations and data to their peers, and the outreach educator.
    • Students will make the connection between their data gathered and the transition between an embryo and a larvae. They will use their data to communicate their findings and observations. From these observations they will learn to draw conclusions.
    • The students will communicate orally both in groups, with the teacher, and the BioEYES Outreach Educator. They will also write down in BioEYES provided notebooks their observations and conclusions.

Objective 3: Understanding the nature of science

  1. Supporting our ideas with evidence/reasoning.
  2. Understanding limits (how to measure, observe).
  3. Differences can be settled by additional investigation (increase your numbers and repetitions).
  4. It is important to be able to communicate your ideas because you can help check whether they are correct.
  • During BioEYES:
    • Students will be encouraged to formulate hypothesis and back up their ideas with their observations. They will be asked to explain their rationale.
    • Students will be encouraged to think of alternative ways to test their hypothesis. In addition they will be encouraged to think about whether these alternatives are feasible.
    • This will take place in an environment where students are encouraged to think freely in an open environment.

STANDARD 4: Life Science

Objective 1: How do external features of an animal help it to survive?

  • During BioEYES:
    • Students will observe and document what are the external features of zebrafish.
    • Students will discuss how these features help the zebrafish to survive in its environment.
    • Students will compare and contrast human anatomy with zebrafish anatomy. They will learn what features zebrafish have that make them well adapted for the water and why humans are not well adapted for living in water.

Objective 2: What are basic needs of living things to survive?

  • During BioEYES:
    • Students will learn what the needs of zebrafish are to survive.
    • Students will discuss what all living things need to survive.
