Virtual BioEYES

Our "Virtual BioEYES" modules replicate our in-person programs for fully-online remote learning. They come in a Pear Deck version, where the students participate in real-time within the presentation, and a "Zeebo" version, where the students complete their own copy of the module directly in Google Slides. Both versions can be done synchronously or asynchronously and are currently available for 4th/5th grade, 7th/8th grade, and high school.

If you would like to access the BioEYES Virtual Modules, please fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

Programs

Micro — 4th/5th Grades

The Micro program uses the zebrafish to talk about habitats, the needs of embryos, anatomical comparisons between humans and fish, and heart functions. In the process, students also discuss the scientific method and different types of careers in science.

Intermediate — 7th/8th Grades

The Intermediate program asks students what they think the offspring of two zebrafish with different phenotypes will look like. Their observations tell them the answer, and we introduce basic Mendelian genetics and Punnett squares to explain how it happened.

Advanced — High School

Our Advanced program uses heterozygous mutations for a more in-depth Mendelian genetic experiment where the students determine the genotypes of several different adult zebrafish by observing the phenotypes of their offspring, while also discussing stem cells and vertebrate embryonic development. May also be suitable for honors 7th/8th grade students.

AP — Upper High School

These modules introduce zebrafish and their use in science, then lead the students through a genetics experiment to determine the inheritance pattern of zebrafish pigment mutants, with in-depth discussion of vertebrate embryo development. Suitable for upper-level Honors or AP high school students.

Optional Extensions

These extensions are designed to follow one of the BioEYES programs listed above.

Fish Dynamics — Middle or High School

This week-long program focuses on experimental design, data collection, and graphing, allowing the students to create and perform their own experiment on how temperature affects the development of zebrafish embryos. The virtual versions are intended to be done with a teacher’s guidance, and so are only available synchronously.

Cholesterol and Drug Development — High School

This individual module discusses cholesterol: what it is, where it comes from, and its effect on health, as well as how zebrafish can be used to help develop new medications. It also goes into the steps a new drug must go through to be approved for use, and touches on how this affected the development of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Access the BioEYES Virtual Modules

The BioEYES Virtual Modules are free and open-access, but we would like to keep track of how they are being used. Submitting this form will take you to a page where you can make personal copies of all of the modules.
